NON – VOCATIONAL TRAINING

The non-vocational training is designed and aimed to provide the trainees with the self-confidence and self-esteem they need to progress into vocational based training.

The emphasis of the non-vocational training is more on the inter-personal, independence and social skills rather than the academic skills of the trainee.  Trainees are encouraged to made informed choices and decisions, learn to communicate and co-operate with others effectively, while in a supportive and safe environment.  All these skills are of extreme importance to succeed in an employment situation and the individual’s future.

The practical emphasis is to acquire skills which are necessary for later in life or which they simply enjoy doing.

Various activities are on offer:

*      Building work and renovations.

All renovations done on Nansen properties are done with the help of the trainees. The only two exceptions to the rule are roof work and electrical work.

Examples of renovations: installing new kitchen, new toilets, preserving work to our old train station building, etc

Examples of building work: new workshop, pond bridge, etc

                During....                                                    Finished product!!

*      Picnic benches/planters/and other

Picnic benches are constructed using our own design on demand. They are sold purely at the cost price of the material. For further information on the cost price, please contact the office.

*      Basic gardening

The grounds around the day training centre are maintained by the staff and trainees. This gives us the opportunity to learn and enhance our gardening skills.

SOCIAL TRAINING

The social training is embedded throughout all the training programmes. Some additional activities are organised during the year.

EXCURSIONS

Excursions can be arranged for different reasons:  a common interest, a birthday celebration or a treat for the trainees.  Some of the excursions we have done are visiting the local radio station, boat trip to see the dolphins, visiting the wildlife park, RAF Kinloss, etc.

CAMPING TRIPS

Camping trips are organised on a regular basis.

They are the perfect tool to introduce social skills as the campers need to rely on each other during the trip.

Three levels of camping are organised.

  1. Camping on a camping site with all facilities close by. Places visited before: Dornoch campsite and Gairloch Big Sands.
  2. Camping in the country side of Scotland, mainly on the west coast, with easy access to transport. Places visited before: Ullapool, Gairloch Portree, etc.
  3. and finally, the hike whereby the camping is combined with a walk of several miles! All equipment and food needs carried on this trip. Tracks done before: Kilmarie - Camasunary (South Skye), Scardroy - Achnashella and walks to Sandwood bay are planned.

Depending on the abilities, the trainees can choose between one of these. The third level of camping requires a physical endurance test.

Field trips

At times, field trips are organised and they could take the shape of different formats.

A long weekend in a youth hostel in Edinburgh or an orienteering walk with the use of a compass and map. Anything is possible.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Every week, various sport session are organised.  A rota system provides the opportunity for each trainee to choose and organise the sporting activity with the help of a member of staff.  Sports include swimming, football, snooker, fitness equipment, roller bowl etc.
